The Full Story

At Kai Shen Martial Arts, we offer classes in Wing Chun and Escrima. Wing Chun is one of the most famous Chinese kung fu styles, known for its emphasis on structure, stance, and efficient striking. Having a direct lineage from Ip Man, one of Wing Chun's most renowned modern masters.

Escrima/Arnis is one of the best-known Filipino martial arts, focused on weapons like rattan sticks, swords, and blades. A lineage tracing back to Leo Giron, a respected escrima master.

Having an authentic lineage impacts the training methodology and philosophy here at Kai Shen Martial Arts.

What is Wing Chun

Wing Chun is a close-quarter combat system known for its emphasis on sensitivity, centerline principle, and developing a subconscious reaction to physical confrontations.

  1. Close-quarter combat: Wing Chun is designed for close-range encounters, making it well-suited for self-defense situations where the attacker is within one's personal space.

  2. Sensitivity and centerline: The art focuses on developing sensitivity to the opponent's movements and maintaining control of the centerline, which is the straight line between two opponents.

  3. Subconscious reactions: Through training, Wing Chun practitioners aim to develop a secondary reaction, where they can respond instinctively with appropriate techniques without consciously thinking about which technique to use.

  4. Neutral stance: The system emphasizes being able to defend oneself effectively from a neutral standing or sitting position, which is beneficial in unexpected confrontations.

  5. Personal bubble: Wing Chun is designed to be effective at close quarters, within one's personal space or "bubble," where many other martial arts may not be as practical.

Overall, Wing Chun's principles and training methods are geared toward developing effective close-quarter self-defense skills that can be employed instinctively in real-life situations, making it a popular choice for self-protection and personal security.

What is Escrima

Escrima -  The Filipino martial art focused on bladed weapons

  • We teach the Original Giron Escrima System lineage of Escrima.

  • Rather than just defensive techniques, the student will start by learning proper use and training with edged weapons like swords, daggers, and knives.

  • The philosophy is that to truly defend against a weapon, one must first understand the weapon itself and how it is used.

  • The student will build a strong foundational understanding for handling edged weapons confidently.

  • This groundwork then allows students to develop the ability to defend themselves with those same weapons if needed.

Emphasizing the mastery of the actual bladed weapons before moving to defensive tactics against them is an insightful approach. It allows students to respect the weapons and develop a deeper knowledge that can facilitate their defense skills.
